Hey everyone,
I’ve been trying to figure out how to jupyter-notebook open python with utf-8 encoding, but I’m kinda stuck.

I’ve got some Python files with non-ASCII characters, and when I open them in Jupyter Notebook, it’s all messed up. Like, special chars are showing as gibberish.

Anyone know how to make sure Jupyter reads the file with UTF-8 encoding? I tried a few things like adding `# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-` at the top of the script, but no luck.

Also, is there a way to set UTF-8 as the default encoding for opening files in Jupyter? Or do I have to do something manually every time?

Hey! I had the same issue with jupyter-notebook open python with utf-8 encoding. What worked for me was adding this line at the top of my script:
`# -*- coding: utf-8 -*-`
But since you already tried that, maybe check your Jupyter Notebook settings? You can set the default encoding in the config file.

Try running this in your terminal:
`jupyter notebook --generate-config`
Then open the config file and add:
`c.ContentsManager.encoding = 'utf-8'`

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, everyone! I tried the `c.ContentsManager.encoding = 'utf-8'` trick, and it seems to be working now.

I also installed `chardet` to check the encoding of my files, and turns out one of them was actually in a different encoding. Fixed that, and now everything looks good.

Quick follow-up: Does anyone know if there’s a way to force Jupyter to always use UTF-8 for new files too? Or do I have to set it manually each time?
