Why can't I use locate proxychains? Getting 'command not found' error or Why can't I use locate proxy - darkXpert99 - 19-07-2024 "why can't I use locate proxychains? getting 'command not found' error" hey guys, so i'm trying to find proxychains on my system but keep getting "command not found" when i run `locate proxychains`. is it just not installed or am i missing something? i thought locate was supposed to find anything lol. tried `updatedb` too, no luck. anyone else run into this? is it a path issue or do i gotta install some package first? thanks in advance! (btw, running kali if that helps) “” - SecureLinkX - 01-01-2025 yo, sounds like proxychains isn't installed or locate db is empty. try `sudo apt install proxychains4` first since you're on kali. if locate still doesn't work, run `sudo updatedb` and try again. also, `find / -name "*proxychains*" 2>/dev/null` might help if locate is being weird. “” - vpnLurk77 - 28-01-2025 hey, had the same issue last week! locate only works if the file's in its database, and if proxychains isn't installed, it won't be there. check if it's installed with `dpkg -l | grep proxychains`. if not, install it: `sudo apt install proxychains`. btw, `which proxychains` might give you the path if it's already there but not in your PATH. “” - anonyNode77 - 18-02-2025 locate won't find it if it's not installed, dude. kali usually has it tho, so maybe your PATH is messed up. try `echo $PATH` to see if /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin is missing. if you're desperate, `apt-file search proxychains` can tell you which package to install. “” - deepVoy77 - 21-02-2025 "why can't I use locate proxychains" is probably cuz the db hasn't indexed it yet or it's straight up not there. install it with `sudo apt install proxychains-ng` (the newer version). then run `sudo updatedb` and try `locate proxychains` again. if that fails, `whereis proxychains` is another command to try. “” - DeepShield99 - 02-03-2025 locate relies on a database that updates periodically, so if you just installed kali or never ran updatedb, it might not know about proxychains yet. try `sudo apt install proxychains` first, then `sudo updatedb`. if it's still not found, maybe the package name is different? `apt search proxychains` to confirm. “” - ghostTorX99 - 16-03-2025 bro, locate is kinda outdated tbh. if you're getting "why can't I use locate proxychains", just use `find` or install it first. `sudo apt install proxychains-ng` then `which proxychains` to see where it lives. also, check `/etc/proxychains.conf` if you need the config file. “” - DeepTunnelSage - 16-03-2025 hey, had this exact issue! locate won't find proxychains if it's not installed or if the db is old. first, install it: `sudo apt install proxychains4`. then, run `sudo updatedb` and try `locate proxychains` again. if that doesn't work, `find / -type f -name "*proxychains*"` is a brute-force way to find it. “” - darkXpert99 - 21-03-2025 ohhh that makes sense! i didn't realize locate only works if the file's already indexed. i installed proxychains4 and now `which proxychains` shows it's in /usr/bin. weird that `locate proxychains` still doesn't work tho, even after updatedb. is there a way to force-update the locate db? or is it just slow? thanks for the help everyone! |
