"How Effective Are Rotating Proxies for Web Scraping and Avoiding Bans?"

Hey folks,

So I’ve been messing around with web scraping lately, and I keep hearing about rotating proxies. Do they *actually* help avoid bans, or is it just hype?

Like, if I’m scraping a site that’s super strict with IP blocks, will a rotating proxy save me? Or am I just delaying the inevitable?

Also, how many IPs do you even need to make it work? I’ve seen some setups with like 100+ IPs, but that seems overkill for small projects.

Any real-world experiences? Would love to hear what’s worked (or failed) for you guys.

Cheers!

Rotating proxies are a game-changer if you’re scraping aggressively. I’ve used Luminati (now Bright Data) and it’s solid, but pricey.

For smaller projects, even 10-20 IPs can work if you rotate them smartly. The key is to mimic human behavior—random delays, different user agents, etc.

Sites like ScraperAPI and Oxylabs also offer rotating proxy solutions that handle the rotation for you. Worth checking out if you don’t wanna manage it yourself.

Honestly, rotating proxies are overhyped unless you’re scraping at scale. If you’re just pulling data occasionally, a few residential proxies or even VPN switches might do the trick.

I got banned once even with rotating proxies cuz my request patterns were too predictable. So yeah, it’s not just about the IPs—you gotta mix up your tactics.

Rotating proxies *can* work, but it’s not a magic bullet. I’ve had success with Smartproxy for mid-sized projects. Their IP pool is decent, and the rotation is smooth.

But if the site you’re scraping has advanced bot detection (like Cloudflare), even rotating proxies might not save you. You’ll need to add CAPTCHA solvers or other tricks.

From my experience, rotating proxies are clutch for avoiding bans, but you gotta balance cost vs. benefit.

I run a small e-commerce scraper with like 50 IPs from ProxyMesh. Works fine for my needs. Anything more is overkill unless you’re scraping Amazon or something insane.

Also, don’t forget to throttle your requests. No proxy will save you if you’re hammering the server with 100 requests/sec.

Thanks for all the insights, everyone! Super helpful.

I think I’ll give rotating proxies a shot with one of the tools mentioned—probably Smartproxy or ProxyMesh since my project’s small.

One follow-up: How often do you guys rotate IPs? Like, per request or every few minutes? I don’t wanna overdo it and waste resources.

Also, anyone tried scraping with rotating proxies + Tor? Curious if that’s overcomplicating things.

Rotating proxies are legit, but they’re not foolproof. I’ve been blocked even with a huge IP pool because the site fingerprint my sessions.

Tools like ScrapeOps can help monitor your scraping and adjust rotation rates automatically. Saves a ton of headache.

Also, free proxies? Forget it. They’re slow, unreliable, and often already blacklisted.

If you’re just starting out, rotating proxies might seem like overkill. But once you hit a ban, you’ll see why they’re worth it.

I use ProxyRack and it’s been pretty reliable. Their residential proxies rotate cleanly, and I’ve avoided bans on most sites.

Just remember—some sites are just anti-scraping no matter what. You’ll need to weigh the effort vs. the data you’re after.

Rotating proxies are essential if you’re scraping anything remotely sensitive. I’ve tried scraping without them and got insta-banned.

Now I use a mix of datacenter and residential proxies (from GeoSurf) and it’s been smooth sailing.

Pro tip: Rotate not just IPs but also headers and request patterns. Sites are getting smarter these days.

It really depends on the site. Some don’t care, others will nuke you no matter what.

I’ve had good luck with rotating proxies from Storm Proxies for smaller jobs. Their rotation is automatic, so you don’t have to micromanage.

But yeah, if you’re scraping a hardcore anti-bot site, you might need more than just proxies—like headless browsers or even manual intervention.
