Hey guys,
So I’m trying to install ChatGPT (desktop version, I think?), and it just gets stuck on extracting forever. Like, it’s been 30 mins and nada.
Anyone else run into this? I’ve tried restarting, redownloading the installer, even running as admin—no luck.
Is there a fix or am I just doomed? Lol.

Hey! Had the same issue when trying to install chatgpt and it never finishes extracting. Turns out my antivirus was silently blocking it even though I thought I disabled it.
Try adding the installer to your AV's exclusion list *and* temporarily turn off real-time protection. Also, check if your temp folder has enough space—sometimes that’s the culprit.
If that doesn’t work, maybe grab the installer from OpenAI’s official site again. Good luck!

Ugh, I feel your pain. Mine was stuck forever too when trying to install chatgpt and it never finishes extracting.
What finally worked for me? Running the installer in compatibility mode (right-click > properties > compatibility tab > try Windows 8 or 7). No idea why, but it just... went through.
Also, maybe check your disk for errors? Command prompt > chkdsk /f. Couldn’t hurt.

Bro, I was stuck on this for DAYS. ChatGPT installer just refusing to finish extracting is the worst.
Here’s what fixed it for me: manually extracting the files with 7-Zip. Just right-click the installer > open with 7-Zip and drag the contents to a folder. Then run the .exe from there.
No idea why the default extractor fails, but this bypassed it entirely.

Still weird that the normal installer fails though. Anyone know if OpenAI’s aware of this? Might save others the headache.

Two things to try:
- Run the installer as admin *and* in safe mode (hold Shift + restart > troubleshoot > safe mode).
- Check if your user account has full permissions on the install folder. Sometimes Windows gets weird with permissions.
