How to curl post a URL with proper syntax and headers? or What’s the correct way to curl post a URL? - DeepTunnelSage - 08-11-2024

"Help! Can't get my curl post a url command to work – what am I missing?"

Hey folks,

Trying to curl post a url but keep getting errors. My syntax looks like this:

```
curl -X POST https://example.com/api -d '{"key":"value"}'
```

But it’s either throwing a 400 or just ignoring the data.

Am I missing headers? Do I need `-H "Content-Type: application/json"` or something? Also, should I use `--data` instead of `-d`?

Kinda new to this, so a step-by-step breakdown would be *chef’s kiss*.

Bonus Q: Any best practices for curl post a url? Like, should I always include certain headers?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

(PS: If you’ve got a working example, pls share!)

Hey! Yeah, you def need the `Content-Type: application/json` header when you curl post a url with JSON data. Otherwise, the server might not know how to handle it.

Try this:

```
curl -X POST https://example.com/api \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"key":"value"}'
```

Also, check if the server expects any other headers like `Authorization`. Sometimes APIs are picky.

For testing, Postman or Insomnia are great tools to debug before using curl post a url commands.

400 usually means bad request, so your JSON might be malformed or missing something.

Quick tip: use `--data-raw` instead of `-d` if you’re having issues with special chars. Also, escape quotes if needed:

```
curl -X POST https://example.com/api -H "Content-Type: application/json" --data-raw '{\"key\":\"value\"}'
```

If that doesn’t work, maybe the endpoint requires URL-encoded data? Try `-d "key=value"` without JSON.

Bro, I feel you. Curl post a url can be a pain at first.

Headers are *everything*. At minimum, you need `Content-Type`. Some APIs also want `Accept: application/json`.

Here’s a foolproof template:

```
curl -X POST https://example.com/api \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-H "Accept: application/json" \
-d '{"key":"value"}'
```

If it still fails, use `-v` to see the full request/response. Lifesaver for debugging.

You might be missing quotes or escaping issues in your JSON. Try this:

```
curl -X POST https://example.com/api \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d @data.json
```

Put your JSON in a file (`data.json`) to avoid shell messing with the syntax.

Also, 400 could mean the server expects a different format. Check the API docs—some want form-data, not JSON.

Wow, thanks everyone! The `-v` flag was a game-changer—turns out the server was expecting an `Authorization` header I totally missed.

Updated my curl post a url command with the header, and it worked!

Quick follow-up: How do I handle nested JSON? Like if my payload has `{"user": {"name": "test"}}`? Does the syntax change?

Also, shoutout to the curlconverter.com suggestion. That site’s gold.

Pro tip: Use `jq` to format your JSON before curling. Helps spot syntax errors:

```
echo '{"key":"value"}' | jq .
```

Then curl post a url with the clean JSON.

Also, `-v` or `--trace-ascii debug.txt` will show you EXACTLY what’s being sent. Super handy for figuring out why the server’s unhappy.

If you’re still stuck, try this online curl converter: [https://curlconverter.com/](https://curlconverter.com/). Paste your curl post a url command, and it’ll give you working code in other languages too.

Sometimes the issue isn’t curl—it’s the server rejecting the request. Test with a simple endpoint like [https://httpbin.org/post](https://httpbin.org/post) to see if your curl works elsewhere.
