"Need help: How to setup a proxy server for better privacy and access?"

Hey guys, I’m kinda new to this whole proxy thing but wanna learn how to setup a proxy server at home. Mostly for privacy and maybe accessing some geo-blocked stuff.

I’ve seen a few tutorials but they’re either too technical or skip steps. Anyone got a simple guide or tips for beginners? Like, what software to use, basic configs, etc.

Also, is it better to use a raspberry pi or just run it on my main PC?

Thanks in advance!

"What’s the easiest way to setup a proxy server at home?"

Yo, looking for the simplest way to setup a proxy server. Not a tech expert but willing to tinker a bit.

Heard about squid and nginx, but no clue where to start. Any recommendations for noobs?

Also, does it slow down internet speed much?

Appreciate any help!

If you're just starting out with how to setup a proxy server, I'd recommend using Squid Proxy—it's beginner-friendly and well-documented.

You can install it on a Raspberry Pi if you want a low-power, always-on solution, but running it on your main PC works too if you don’t mind keeping it on.

For a simple guide, check out DigitalOcean’s tutorial on Squid—it breaks things down step by step.

Speed-wise, yeah, it might slow things a bit, but not too bad if you’re just browsing.

Yo, forget the complicated stuff—just use Privoxy if you want something dead simple.

It’s lightweight and great for privacy. No crazy configs needed.

Run it on your main PC first to test, then move to a Pi later if you like it.

Also, check out SSH tunneling as an alternative—super easy and secure.

For geo-blocking, a proxy might not be enough—consider a VPN instead. But if you’re set on learning how to setup a proxy server, try Nginx as a reverse proxy.

It’s a bit more advanced but way more flexible.

Raspberry Pi is perfect for this—low cost and energy efficient.

Here’s a quick guide: https://nginx.org/en/docs/beginners_guide.html

Honestly, if you’re not tech-savvy, maybe start with 3proxy. It’s super lightweight and has fewer settings to mess up.

Run it on your main rig first to see how it feels.

Speed loss? Depends on your setup, but usually minimal for basic use.

If you wanna go the Raspberry Pi route, Pi-hole + a proxy is a killer combo for privacy AND ad-blocking.

Squid is solid, but TinyProxy is even simpler for beginners.

Here’s a dumbed-down guide: https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-set-up-a-proxy-server

Speed? Barely noticeable if you’re just browsing.

Forget proxies—just use WireGuard or Tailscale. Way easier and more secure.

But if you’re dead set on how to setup a proxy server, CCProxy is Windows-friendly and has a GUI. No command-line nonsense.

RPi is overkill unless you’re running it 24/7.

Speed hit? Yeah, but not huge unless you’re streaming.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys!

I tried Squid on my old laptop following DigitalOcean’s guide, and it worked! A bit slow but not terrible.

Now I’m curious—any tips on securing it further? Like, how do I stop randos from using my proxy?

Also, might grab a Pi soon for a dedicated setup. Cheers!
