How do I properly set proxy settings for my network? or What's the best way to set proxy settings on - dataVoyX99 - 22-04-2024

"Having trouble with connection issues—how do I set proxy settings correctly?"

Hey folks,

So I’ve been trying to set proxy settings on my Windows machine, but no matter what I do, my connection keeps acting up. Like, I enter the proxy IP and port, hit save, but it’s like the system just ignores it?

Am I missing something? Do I need to restart or flush some cache? Also, does it work differently on Linux/Mac?

And yeah, I’ve checked the "Automatically detect settings" box—still nada.

If anyone’s got a step-by-step or knows why the changes aren’t sticking, pls help a dude out.

Thanks!

(Also, if there’s a *better* way to set proxy settings for secure browsing, lmk!)

Hey! Had the same issue last week. Turns out, sometimes Windows doesn’t apply proxy settings properly unless you restart.

Try this:
1. set proxy settings manually (IP + port)
2. Uncheck "Automatically detect settings"
3. Restart your PC

If it still doesn’t work, check if your admin blocked proxy changes. Also, for Linux/Mac, it’s way easier—just use the network settings GUI or terminal commands like `export http_proxy`.

For secure browsing, try VPNs like ProtonVPN or Windscribe—they’re simpler than messing with proxies.

Ugh, proxies can be such a pain. Are you sure the proxy IP and port are correct? Maybe test them in a browser first.

Also, after you set proxy settings, open CMD and run:
`netsh winhttp reset proxy`

This clears any old configs. If you’re on Linux, `sudo nano /etc/environment` and add the proxy vars there.

Btw, if you’re just trying to browse securely, Tor Browser might be easier than fiddling with system-wide proxies.

Yo! Proxies are weird on Windows—sometimes it’s the *user* permissions.

Try this:
- set proxy settings as admin (right-click Network settings > Run as admin)
- Disable IPv6 in network adapter settings (weirdly fixes some proxy issues)

For Linux, just edit `/etc/proxychains.conf` and boom, done.

If you’re still stuck, FoxyProxy (browser extension) lets you toggle proxies without touching system settings. Lifesaver!

Bro, same. Windows proxy settings are janky. Here’s what worked for me:

1. set proxy settings in Chrome/Firefox *and* Windows (yeah, both).
2. Flush DNS (`ipconfig /flushdns`).
3. Check if your firewall (like Windows Defender) is blocking the proxy.

For Linux, `gsettings` or `export` in bashrc does the trick.

Also, if security’s the goal, just use a VPN. Mullvad’s solid.

OP here—thanks for all the tips! Tried the `netsh winhttp reset proxy` and restart, and it *finally* stuck.

Weirdly, my work VPN was overriding the proxy settings. Switched to FoxyProxy for browsers and it’s way smoother.

Still curious—why’s setting proxies on Windows such a mess compared to Linux? Like, why need admin rights for basic network tweaks?

Anyway, huge thanks y’all!

Hey! Proxies can be tricky, especially if the config’s cached.

After you set proxy settings, try:
- `ipconfig /release` + `ipconfig /renew`
- Disable/re-enable your network adapter

On Mac/Linux, it’s smoother—just use `networksetup` (Mac) or env vars (Linux).

For a no-hassle secure setup, consider Psiphon or TunnelBear—way less headache than manual proxies.

Wait, are you on a work/school network? Some orgs force their own proxy settings and block changes.

If not, try:
- set proxy settings via CMD (`netsh winhttp set proxy`)
- Reboot (annoying, but works)

Linux/Mac are more straightforward—just edit `/etc/profile` or use System Preferences.

For better privacy, Brave Browser + built-in Tor is easier than system proxies.
