"Does Your Proxy Detector Actually Work or Just Give False Positives?"
Hey folks, been testing a few proxy detectors lately and man, some of them are *way* off. Like, they’ll flag legit users as VPNs or miss obvious proxies.
Anyone else run into this? I get that no proxy detector is perfect, but some seem to just guess half the time.
Also, how often do you guys update your lists? Cuz if you’re relying on outdated data, it’s basically useless, right?
Kinda curious—what’s your go-to proxy detector that *actually* works without going nuts on false positives? Or is this just a losing battle?
(Also, side note: why do some detectors freak out over Tor but miss basic datacenter IPs? Makes no sense.)

Yeah, I've been burned by this too. Some proxy detectors are straight-up lazy—flagging everything as suspicious.
I’ve had good luck with IPQS (IPQualityScore). Their proxy detector is pretty accurate and doesn’t freak out over every little thing.
Also, they update their lists *daily*, which helps cut down on false positives.
Tor detection is hit or miss cuz some tools just rely on public lists, but IPQS actually analyzes behavior patterns. Worth checking out!

Ugh, tell me about it. I wasted so much time whitelisting legit users because of garbage proxy detection.
My team switched to MaxMind’s proxy detector last year, and it’s been way better. Fewer false positives, and they actually explain their confidence scores.
Still not perfect, but what is? At least it doesn’t scream "PROXY!!!" at every coffee shop IP.

Honestly, most proxy detectors are trash. They either miss the obvious or block grandma for using her home WiFi.
I’ve been testing ProxyCheck.io lately, and it’s surprisingly decent. Their API is fast, and they have a free tier if you wanna poke around.
Biggest plus? They don’t just rely on IP lists—they actually check for open ports and other proxy behavior.

I’ve been using AbuseIPDB’s proxy checks as a secondary layer. It’s not perfect, but combining it with another tool helps fill the gaps.

Lol, my favorite is when a proxy detector labels *my own office IP* as a datacenter. Like, bro, I’m literally sitting here.
Anyway, I’ve had decent results with GetIPIntel. Their proxy detector uses machine learning, so it adapts better than static lists.
Downside? It’s a bit slower than others, but accuracy > speed imo.

Quick question though: anyone else notice that some proxy detectors *still* can’t tell residential proxies apart from legit users? Drives me nuts.

This is why I gave up on standalone proxy detectors and just use a combo of tools.
Cloudflare’s firewall + a custom script to cross-check with IP2Proxy. Works way better than any single solution.
Also, yeah—Tor detection is weirdly inconsistent. Some tools treat it like the boogeyman while ignoring actual sketchy traffic.
