"Getting a 406 Not Acceptable Error – What’s Causing It and How Do I Fix It?"
Hey folks!
Sooo my site just started throwing a 406 not acceptable error outta nowhere. Like, everything was fine yesterday, and now—boom—visitors can’t access certain pages.
I’ve checked the server logs, but tbh, I’m not 100% sure what’s triggering it. Could it be a header issue? Maybe something’s up with the content negotiation?
Anyone else dealt with this before? Would love some quick tips or even a dumbed-down explanation (lol).
Thanks in advance!

*PS: If you’ve got a fix, pls share—kinda urgent!* 😅
Hey! Had the same 406 not acceptable error last week—drove me nuts. Turns out my server was rejecting requests cuz the Accept headers were messed up.
Check your .htaccess file for any weird rules. Also, run a quick curl -I [your-url] to see what headers are being sent.
If you're on Apache, mod_negotiation might be the culprit. Try disabling it temporarily to test.
Good luck!
Ugh, 406 errors are the worst. Could be a content-type issue—like your server expects JSON but gets HTML or vice versa.
Quick fix: Add this to your .htaccess:
```
Header set Accept "*/*"
```
If that doesn’t work, maybe your backend’s choking on charset or encoding. Check the dev tools network tab to see what’s being sent/received.
406 errors can happen if your server’s configured to only accept specific content types, and the client’s not sending the right ones.
Try this:
1. Inspect the request headers (Firefox/Chrome dev tools).
2. Compare them to what your server expects (check Apache/Nginx config).
If you’re using PHP, double-check any header() calls—might be forcing a weird content-type.
Been there! The 406 not acceptable error often pops up when the server and client can’t agree on content types.
Quick things to try:
- Clear your browser cache (sounds dumb but works sometimes).
- Check if mod_negotiation’s enabled (Apache peeps).
- Test with a simple curl request: curl -H "Accept: */*" [your-url].
If it’s WordPress, a plugin might be messing with headers.
406 errors suck. Here’s what fixed it for me:
1. Look for mod_security rules tripping up (Apache).
2. If you’re using a framework (Django, Laravel), check middleware—might be altering headers.
3. Test with Postman to see if the error persists.
Sometimes it’s just a missing trailing slash in the URL. Weird, but true.
OP here—wow, thanks for all the replies! 🙌
Tried the curl -H "Accept: */*" trick, and it worked! Looks like my server was super picky about headers.
Now I’m digging into why the Accept header got messed up in the first place. Maybe a recent plugin update?
Anyway, you all saved my butt. Gonna check mod_security next just in case.
Cheers! 🍻
