"What’s the best way to find the owner of an ip range?"

Hey guys, kinda new to this but need some help.

I’ve got a bunch of IPs and wanna know who owns them—like, the actual org or company. Tried some random tools online, but results are hit or miss.

Is there a *reliable* way to do an ip range owner lookup without pulling my hair out? Free tools? Paid ones worth it?

Also, how accurate are these lookups usually? Don’t wanna chase down the wrong lead lol.

Thanks in advance! 🙏

(ps. if this has been asked before, my bad—point me to the thread!)
Hey! For ip range owner lookup, I always use ARIN's WHOIS tool (arin.net). It's free and pretty reliable for North American IPs.

If you're dealing with global ranges, try RIPE (for Europe) or APNIC (Asia-Pacific). Accuracy depends on how well the orgs update their records, but it's usually decent.

Paid tools like IPinfo or WhoisXML API give more details, but tbh, ARIN is my go-to for basic checks.
lol i feel u on the random tools being hit or miss.

Try this:
- whois.domaintools.com (simple, clean)
- mxtoolbox.com (has other cool network tools too)

Accuracy? Eh, like 80-90% if the ISP actually updates their records. Sometimes you get outdated info tho.
If you're doing serious research, paid tools are worth it. I use IP2Location—gives way more deets than free stuff.

But for quick ip range owner lookup, just run `whois X.X.X.X` in your terminal (works on Linux/Mac). Windows? Meh, use ARIN's site.

Pro tip: Cross-check with multiple sources to avoid chasing ghosts.
Honestly, most free whois tools scrape the same RIR data, so results are kinda samey.

For a deeper dive, check out Hurricane Electric's BGP toolkit (bgp.he.net). Lets you see ASN info and routing history, which helps ID the real owner.

Accuracy? ISPs are lazy updaters, so grain of salt and all that.
OP here—wow, thanks for all the replies! Didn’t expect so many options.

Tried ARIN and whois.domaintools so far. ARIN was cleaner, but both gave similar results for my test IPs.

Quick q: Anyone know why some ranges show "PRIVATE" or just the ISP name? Is that normal or a dead end?

(also, bgp.he.net looks dope—gonna play with that next!)
newbie here too but fwiw, i found that ipinfo.io has a free tier (limited queries tho).

Also, some ranges are just "ISP Customer" or "LEASED LINE"—super frustrating.

If you're dealing with spammy IPs, abuseipdb.com sometimes has extra context.
For bulk ip range owner lookup, check out UltraTools—lets you paste a list of IPs and spits out the owners.

Free version has limits, but it's saved me hours.

Side note: Cloudflare-proxied IPs? Good luck lol. Those are a dead end.
