Man, I’ve been there. Extra torrent proxies can be so frustrating. I’ve had some luck with TorLock, but it’s not always the fastest.
For safety, I’d say use a VPN and maybe even a DNS leak protection tool. It’s a bit extra, but better safe than sorry, right?
