Is a ValueError a Runtime Error? Understanding Python Exception Types

18 Replies, 1937 Views

I’ve always thought of ValueError as a runtime error because it occurs during execution, not during parsing or compilation. Like, if you pass a string to a function that expects an int, boom—ValueError.

But honestly, does it matter? As long as you handle it with try-except, you’re good. For debugging, I’d recommend checking out Real Python’s guide on exceptions. They break it down really well.
