I’ve been digging into what is a proxy server on PS4 lately too, and it’s pretty interesting. I used Private Internet Access (PIA) for a while, and it worked well for accessing region-locked content.
The key is to choose a server that’s close to the game server. If it’s too far, you’ll just end up with more lag.
Also, make sure your internet connection is solid before blaming the proxy for any issues. Sometimes it’s just your ISP being slow.
