Hey! I had the same issue, and it turned out my firewall was blocking the connection. Make sure your firewall or antivirus isn’t interfering with Thunderbird.
Also, try using a different proxy server. Some proxies just don’t play nice with Gmail. I switched to a paid proxy service, and it worked like a charm.
