Try validating the JSON first. The `jsonschema` library is great for this.

```python
from jsonschema import validate

def json_to_dict(json_str):
try:
data = json.loads(json_str)
validate(instance=data, schema={}) # Replace with your schema
return data
except Exception as e:
print(f"Error: {e}")
return None
```

Might be overkill, but it’s solid.
