Yo! Had this exact issue. Two things:
1. Some proxies need auth even if they claim they don't. Try adding dummy creds like `http://user:pass@proxyip:port`—weirdly worked for me once.
2. If you're on a Mac, firewall settings can block python requests proxy traffic. Check `pfctl` rules.
