"Newbie question: what is an asn in simple terms?"

total noob here trying to wrap my head around networking stuff.
sooo... what is an asn exactly? i keep hearing about it but dunno how it works or why it matters.
is it like an ID for networks or something? who even needs one?
pls explain like i'm 5 lol.
