From my experience, a Smart DNS proxy does improve streaming speeds compared to a VPN because it only reroutes the DNS part of your traffic. Less overhead = less lag.
But like you said, it’s inconsistent. Some days it’s flawless, other days it’s a buffering mess. Works great with Hulu for me, but Netflix is a gamble.
If you’re only after geo-unblocking, stick with Smart DNS. For security, VPN’s better.
