I used the free tier of Google API search images for a small project last month. Hit the limit in like two days lol.
The pricing isn’t crazy, but it’s not transparent either. You gotta keep an eye on your usage or you might get a surprise bill.
For free stuff, try Flickr API—it’s older but still works. Or just scrape Bing Images (not sure how legal that is tho).
