windows 10/11:
- settings > network & internet > proxy.
- flip the switch under "manual proxy setup."

mac:
- apple logo > system prefs > network > advanced > proxies.
- uncheck ALL the proxy options.

also, check for sketchy apps—some install proxies without asking.
