What's the Best Way to Secure an SMB Server Without Sacrificing Performance? or Why Is My SMB Server

SMB server performance issues suck. Here’s my go-to checklist:

- Protocol: SMBv1 is a bottleneck. Upgrade to v3.
- Network: Test with `iperf` to rule out bandwidth issues.
- Disk: Defrag HDDs or switch to SSDs.
- AV: Exclude SMB shares from scans.

For deep dives, Microsoft’s SMB troubleshooting docs are gold.

Wow, thanks for all the tips! Upgrading from SMBv1 to v3 was scary, but it actually worked—way faster now. Still tweaking MTU settings though, anyone got a good guide for that?

Also, disabled AV scanning on the shares, and that helped a ton.

One weird thing: after the upgrade, some older clients can’t connect. Guessing they don’t support v3? Any workaround besides forcing v1 back?
