OP here—thanks for all the insights! Didn’t realize how much less private a sock proxy is compared to a VPN.

Gonna test out Mullvad and maybe mess with Shadowsocks for fun.

Quick follow-up: anyone know if using both (VPN + sock proxy) is overkill or actually helpful?
