How Do I Properly Configure Proxy Server Settings for Better Security? or What’s the Best Way to Conf

On Windows, if the proxy keeps resetting, check for malware or crapware messing with your settings. Use Malwarebytes just in case.

For Linux, you can configure proxy server per-application too—like for Firefox, it’s in Settings > General > Network Settings.

SOCKS is more versatile but harder to set up. If you’re just browsing, HTTP is fine. Also, [Squid](http://www.squid-cache.org/) is a beast for self-hosted proxies.
