Yo, I feel your pain. Thunderbird can be a pain sometimes. For the gmail proxy over thunderbird setup, I found that using a SOCKS5 proxy works best.
Try this: Go to Tools > Options > Advanced > Network & Disk Space > Connection Settings. Select “Manual proxy configuration” and enter your proxy details.
Also, check if your firewall is blocking the connection. That’s what caused my “connection timed out” error. Hope this helps!
