Hmm, I had a similar issue. For me, the problem was the proxy server itself. Some proxies just don’t play nice with Thunderbird. I switched to a different proxy provider, and it worked like a charm.
Also, make sure you’re using the correct port numbers for your gmail proxy over thunderbird setup. Sometimes, the default ports don’t work, and you need to tweak them.
