I feel you, man. Thunderbird can be a headache with proxies. For the gmail proxy over thunderbird setup, I recommend using a VPN instead. It’s way easier to configure and works seamlessly with Thunderbird.
If you’re set on using a proxy, though, make sure your proxy supports HTTPS. Some proxies only work with HTTP, which won’t cut it for Gmail’s secure connections.
