Hey folks,

I’m trying to wrap my head around IPv6 addresses, but all the docs I’ve seen are kinda confusing.

Could someone drop a simple *ipv6 address example* to help me visualize it? Like, how does it look in real use?

I know it’s longer than IPv4, but the colons and abbreviations throw me off. Maybe something like `2001:0db8:85a3::8a2e:0370:7334`? Is that even correct?

Also, how do you shorten it properly? Seen some with double colons (: Smile

and got lost lol.

Hey! That ipv6 address example you gave is actually correct!

IPv6 looks scary at first, but it’s just hex groups separated by colons. The double colon (: Smile

replaces consecutive zeros to shorten it.

For example:
`2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329` becomes `2001:db8::ff00:42:8329`.

IPv6 is a beast, huh? Here’s a breakdown:

Shortened? `2001:db8:aaaa:bbbb::eeee:1234` (if the cccc:dddd part was zeros).

Wow, thanks everyone! This makes way more sense now.

I tried shortening `2001:0db8:0000:0000:0000:ff00:0042:8329` to `2001:db8::ff00:42:8329` using the tools you shared, and it worked!

One last thing—how do you know where the :: goes if there are multiple zero blocks? Like, which one gets replaced?

Also, big thanks for the real-world ipv6 address examples—seeing Google’s and my own router’s helped a ton!

Your example is spot on! IPv6 addresses are 128-bit, so they’re loooong.

Here’s another ipv6 address example: `fd00:1234:5678:9abc:def0:1234:5678:9abc` (used for private networks).

Shortening rules:
1. Drop leading zeros in each group.
2. Replace the longest zero sequence with ::.
