"How Can I Determine Who Owns an IP Address?" or "What’s the Best Way to Determine Who Owns an IP Addres

Hey everyone,

So I’ve been trying to *determine who owns an ip address* for a while now, but I’m kinda stuck. I’ve used a couple of those "IP lookup" tools, but the info seems super vague or just points to an ISP.

Is there a better way to *determine who owns an ip address*? Like, something more accurate? Or am I just outta luck if it’s behind a VPN or proxy?

Also, anyone know if these WHOIS things are reliable? I tried one but got a bunch of techy jargon that didn’t really help.

Thanks in advance for any tips! 🙏

(And yeah, I know I spelled "determine" wrong earlier—typos happen lol.)
Hey! Yeah, IP lookups can be super frustrating when you're trying to determine who owns an ip address. Most tools just give you the ISP because that's who technically owns it.

If you want more details, try ARIN (arin.net) or RIPE (ripe.net) for regional databases. They’re way more reliable than random lookup sites.

VPNs and proxies? Yeah, you’re kinda outta luck there unless you’ve got some serious legal backing. WHOIS is hit or miss—sometimes it’s useful, other times it’s just a wall of tech jargon.
Dude, I feel your pain. Trying to determine who owns an ip address is like pulling teeth sometimes.

Have you checked IP2Location (ip2location.com)? It’s not perfect, but it gives better geolocation data than most.

Also, if the IP’s behind a VPN, forget about it—unless you’re the FBI or something lol. WHOIS is *okay*, but it’s mostly for domains, not IPs.
Honestly, unless you’re a network admin or have a legit reason, you won’t get far trying to determine who owns an ip address. ISPs won’t just hand out customer info.

That said, MaxMind (maxmind.com) has decent tools for geolocation. WHOIS is reliable for domains, but for IPs? Meh.

If it’s a VPN/proxy, you’re SOL unless you’ve got a subpoena.
Yo, been there! To determine who owns an ip address, you gotta dig deeper than basic lookup tools.

Try Hurricane Electric’s BGP Toolkit (bgp.he.net). It’s nerdy but way more accurate for ownership details.

WHOIS is *sometimes* helpful, but yeah, it’s full of jargon. VPNs? Unless you’re law enforcement, it’s a dead end.
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I tried ARIN and it actually gave me way more info than those basic lookup tools. Still no luck with the VPN thing, but I kinda figured that was a long shot.

Shodan looks *super* interesting—gonna play around with that next.

Quick follow-up: Anyone know if these tools work better for older IPs, or does it not matter? Just wondering if I’m wasting time on something that’s been reassigned.

(And yeah, the VPN/proxy thing is a bummer, but I get it.)
Kinda surprised no one’s mentioned Shodan (shodan.io). It’s not just for hacking—it can help determine who owns an ip address by showing what’s hosted on it.

WHOIS is hit or miss, and VPNs/proxies are basically black holes. If you’re just curious, you might hit a wall.
If you’re trying to determine who owns an ip address, you might wanna check Spur (spur.us). It’s got some cool features for tracking VPNs and proxies.

WHOIS is *alright*, but like others said, it’s mostly for domains. ISPs won’t give up customer details easily, so don’t get your hopes up.
