"Need Help: How to Block an IP on My Router?"

Hey guys, I’m trying to block ip on my router but it’s not working?? I added the IP to the blacklist, but somehow it’s still getting through. Am I missing something?

My router’s a basic Netgear one, and I followed the steps in the manual. But idk, maybe I messed up?

Also, does blocking ip actually stop all traffic from that address, or just certain types? Like, can they still ping me or something?

If anyone’s got tips or knows a better way to block ip effectively, pls share! Maybe I need to tweak firewall settings too?

Thanks in advance! 🙏

*(PS: Sorry for typos, typing this in a hurry lol)*
Hey! Blocking an IP on a Netgear router can be tricky if the settings aren’t applied right. Did you save the changes AND reboot the router? Sometimes it doesn’t stick until you restart.

Also, blocking an IP usually stops all incoming traffic, but they might still ping you unless you disable ICMP in the firewall. Check if your router has a "Deny" rule for that IP in the firewall section.

If you’re still stuck, try using OpenDNS or a third-party firewall like GlassWire to block ip more effectively.
Yo, same issue here! I had to dig into the advanced settings to make it work. Just adding the IP to the blacklist isn’t always enough—you gotta make sure the rule is set to "drop" or "reject" packets.

Also, some routers have a "parental controls" section where you can block ip too. Weird, but it works lol.

If you’re tech-savvy, maybe try accessing the router via SSH and blocking it manually with iptables?
Blocking an IP on a router doesn’t always stop everything. Some traffic might slip through if the router’s firmware is outdated. Have you checked for updates?

Also, if the IP is changing (like with a VPN), blocking one won’t help. You might need to block a range or use a dynamic DNS blocker.

Tools like PeerBlock can help on the PC side if the router fails.
Hey, I had this exact problem! Turns out my Netgear router’s "block ip" feature was kinda broken until I reset it to factory settings and re-applied the rules. Annoying, but it worked.

Also, blocking an IP won’t stop pings unless you tweak the firewall. Look for "ICMP Echo" settings and disable ’em.

If you’re still struggling, maybe try Tomato or DD-WRT firmware? More control over blocking.
Just a heads-up—some ISPs override router settings, so even if you block ip, it might not stick. Might wanna call your ISP and ask if they’re messing with your config.

Also, double-check the IP format when you block it. Some routers need it like 192.168.1.1/32 to block a single IP.

If all else fails, a cheap firewall like pfSense can do a better job than most consumer routers.
Blocking an IP on a basic router can be hit or miss. Have you tried logging into the router’s admin page and checking if the rule is actually enabled? Sometimes it shows up but isn’t active.

Also, if the IP is internal (like on your LAN), you might need to block it at the device level with Windows Firewall or something similar.

For external IPs, Cloudflare’s firewall rules are solid if you’re hosting anything.
Dude, I feel you. My Netgear was a pain until I realized the "block ip" feature was buried under "Access Control" instead of the firewall. Weird, right?

Also, blocking won’t stop pings unless you disable ICMP. And some routers just... suck at it. Maybe time to upgrade to something like an ASUS with better firewall options?
If the IP is still getting through, it might be a caching issue. Try clearing your router’s ARP table or waiting a few mins. Sometimes it takes time to propagate.

Also, make sure you’re not confusing IPv4 and IPv6. Some routers handle them separately, so you might need to block both.

For a quick fix, try using a script like "fail2ban" if you’re dealing with repeated attacks.
Wow, thanks for all the tips, guys! I didn’t even think about the ICMP thing or the router reboot. I’ll try that tonight.

Quick question though—if I block ip in the firewall AND the blacklist, does that make it more effective? Or is that overkill?

Also, gonna check if my firmware’s outdated. Appreciate the help! 🙌
