For the lazy folks (like me), just Google "IP version checker." Tons of sites will auto-detect it for you.

But your method works too—IPv4 is the one you can actually read without squinting.

Fun fact: IPv6 was invented ‘cause we ran out of IPv4 addresses. So yeah, it had to be longer.
