Title: Firefox Proxy Settings Not Working? Any Fixes or Alternatives?
Hey everyone,
Been trying to set up a firefox proxy for better privacy, but it’s just not connecting. Followed a few guides, but nada. Anyone else run into this?
Using a SOCKS5 proxy, but Firefox keeps timing out. Double-checked the IP/port, even tried different servers. Is there a common fix I’m missing?
Or should I just switch to a VPN instead? Heard some folks say VPNs are more reliable, but I kinda prefer the simplicity of a firefox proxy.
Thanks in advance!

*PS: If you’ve got a working firefox proxy setup, drop your config details. Would really help!*
Hey! Had the same issue with firefox proxy last week. Turns out my firewall was blocking the SOCKS5 connection.
Try disabling your firewall temporarily to test. If it works, add an exception for Firefox.
Also, check if your proxy provider supports SOCKS5—some only do HTTP.
If you're still stuck, maybe give FoxyProxy a shot. It’s a Firefox addon that makes proxy management way easier.
Ugh, firefox proxy settings can be so finicky. Double-check if you’re using the correct proxy type (SOCKS5 vs HTTP).
Also, try ticking the "Proxy DNS when using SOCKS v5" box in Firefox’s network settings. That fixed it for me once.
If all else fails, a VPN might be simpler. But if you’re set on a proxy, maybe test with a free one first to rule out provider issues.
Yo, same problem here! Firefox proxy kept failing until I realized my ISP was blocking certain ports.
Try switching to port 443 or 80—sometimes those slip through.
Also, this guide helped me: [link to a firefox proxy setup tutorial].
VPNs are easier, but proxies give more control. Stick with it if you can!
Firefox proxy issues are often DNS-related. Make sure "Remote DNS" is enabled in your settings.
Also, try flushing your DNS cache (ipconfig /flushdns on Windows).
If you’re using a paid proxy, their support might have specific Firefox configs. Worth asking!
Honestly, I gave up on firefox proxy and switched to a VPN. But if you wanna keep trying, check your proxy logs for errors.
Sometimes the issue is on the provider’s end—like their servers are overloaded.
Or try a different browser (like Tor) to see if it’s a Firefox-specific bug.
Thanks for all the tips, folks! Tried the DNS flush and firewall tweaks—no luck yet.
Gonna test FoxyProxy later today.
Quick Q: Anyone know if IPv6 could mess with firefox proxy settings? Saw a random forum post about it.
PS: Appreciate the help! Will update if anything works.
Had this exact issue! My fix was to manually set the proxy in Firefox’s about:config page.
Search for "network.proxy.socks_remote_dns" and set it to true.
Also, some proxies need authentication—did you enter your username/password correctly?
