What can people do with your IP? Should you be worried?
Hey everyone, just been thinking about this lately. What can people do with your IP? Like, is it really that big of a deal?
I know they can kinda see your general location, maybe mess with your internet if they’re skilled. But can they like, hack into your devices or something?
Also, how do you even protect yourself? VPNs seem popular, but are they enough? Or am I overthinking it?
Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences. Maybe some of you have dealt with this before?
Thanks!
What can people do with your IP? Honestly, it’s not as scary as some make it sound, but it’s not nothing either.
They can’t just "hack into your devices" directly, but they can target you with attacks like DDoS or port scanning if they’re determined.
VPNs are a solid start—I use NordVPN and it’s been great. Also, make sure your router’s firewall is on.
If you’re really paranoid, check out tools like Wireshark to see what’s happening on your network.
What can people do with your IP? Mostly just annoy you, lol.
They can see your rough location (like city-level), maybe spam you, or try to scare you. But unless you’re a high-profile target, chances are low.
Still, a VPN like ProtonVPN or Surfshark helps. Also, disable remote access on your router—just in case.
What can people do with your IP? Well, it’s like leaving your front door unlocked.
Skilled folks can do stuff like track your activity, inject malware, or even impersonate you online.
I’d recommend using a VPN (ExpressVPN is my go-to) and enabling two-factor auth everywhere.
Oh, and check your IP for leaks here: ipleak.net. Super handy!
What can people do with your IP? Depends on how bored they are, tbh.
Mostly, they’ll just troll or try to scare you. But yeah, they *could* do more if they’re skilled.
VPNs help, but also change your router’s default password. So many people forget that!
For extra safety, try Tor Browser if you’re really worried.
Wow, thanks for all the replies! Didn’t realize how much you could do with just an IP.
I tried ipleak.net like someone suggested, and yeah, my VPN wasn’t fully hiding my DNS. Fixed it now!
Also, changed my router password—never even thought about that before.
One more thing: is Tor better than a VPN for hiding your IP, or is it overkill for casual use?
What can people do with your IP? Not much unless you’re careless.
They can’t magically hack you, but they can exploit weak spots in your network.
Use a VPN (I like CyberGhost), keep your devices updated, and maybe use a firewall like GlassWire to monitor traffic.
Also, don’t click sketchy links—common sense goes a long way.
What can people do with your IP? A lot if they’re motivated, but most aren’t.
They could DDoS you, try to phish, or just be a nuisance.
VPNs are good, but also check your router settings—disable UPnP if it’s on.
For testing, use dnsleaktest.com to see if your VPN is actually hiding your IP.
