"Best way to curl file from command line? Need tips!"

Hey folks,

I'm trying to curl file from a URL but keep running into weird issues. Sometimes it downloads, other times it just hangs.

What's your go-to command for this? I usually do `curl -O [url]`, but wondering if there's a better way.

Also, how do you handle redirects or auth?

Thanks in advance!

"Why does my curl file download fail with a 403 error?"

Ugh, so frustrating—I’m trying to curl file from a site, but it keeps throwing a 403.

Works fine in browser tho?

I’ve tried adding `-L` for redirects and even some basic headers, but no luck.

Anyone run into this before? Is there a sneaky header I’m missing?

Help a noob out!
Hey! For basic curl file downloads, I always use `curl -OL [url]` since `-L` handles redirects automatically.

If you're hitting auth issues, try `-u username:password` or pass a token in headers with `-H "Authorization: Bearer xxx"`.

Also, check out `curl --verbose` to debug hangs—it shows exactly where things fail.
403 errors are usually a headers problem. Some sites block plain curl file requests. Try faking a browser agent:

```
curl -H "User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0" -O [url]
```

If that doesn’t work, inspect the browser request (F12 > Network tab) and copy ALL headers. Annoying but works.
Pro tip: Use `wget` instead if curl file downloads keep failing. It’s more resilient for simple downloads:

```
wget --user-agent="Mozilla" [url]
```

But if you’re stuck with curl, `-v` is your best friend for debugging.
For redirects, `-L` is key, but some sites need cookies too. Try:

```
curl -L --cookie-jar cookies.txt -O [url]
```

If it’s a 403, maybe the site checks referers? Add `-H "Referer: https://example.com"`.
Ugh, 403s are the worst. Sometimes it’s cloudflare or bot protection. Try this combo:

```
curl -A "Mozilla" -H "Accept-Language: en-US" -L [url]
```

If still no luck, maybe the url is session-based? Check if it works in incognito.
If your curl file download hangs, add `--connect-timeout 10` to bail early. Also, `--retry 3` helps with flaky connections.

For auth, `-n` can read creds from .netrc file. Cleaner than hardcoding!
403? Might be IP blocking. Try a VPN or proxy with curl:

```
curl -x http://proxy:port -O [url]
```

Or use Postman to test the request first—it’s easier to tweak headers there.
For big files, add `-C -` to resume broken downloads. Lifesaver!

```
curl -C - -O [url]
```

Also, `--limit-rate 1M` prevents bandwidth hogging.
If curl file fails, check if the site requires a POST request. Weird, but happens:

```
curl -X POST -d "param=value" -O [url]
```

Or maybe it’s a hidden API? Use `curl -I` to inspect headers first.
