Title: Chrome browser not picking up VPN on Chromebook – anyone else facing this?
Hey folks,
So I’ve been having this weird issue where my *chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook*. Like, the VPN is connected (shows the lil key icon and everything), but Chrome acts like it’s not even there. Sites still show my real location, and speed tests don’t reflect the VPN server.
Tried restarting, reconnecting, even reinstalled the VPN app—nada. Works fine on other devices tho.
Anyone else run into this? Is it a ChromeOS thing or just me being unlucky?
Also, if you’ve got fixes, pls share. I’m kinda stuck here.
Thanks!

Hey! Had the same issue last week with chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook. Turns out ChromeOS has some weird proxy settings that override the VPN.
Try this:
Go to *chrome://settings/system* and disable "Use secure DNS". Also, check if "Use a proxy server" is off.
Worked for me after a reboot. If not, maybe try a different VPN provider? I switched to NordVPN and it’s been solid.
Ugh, VPNs on Chromebooks can be such a pain. I’ve seen this before where chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook happens because of the built-in security stuff.
One thing that helped me was forcing the VPN to use OpenVPN (if your provider supports it). Some apps just don’t play nice with ChromeOS’s network stack.
Also, check out the VPN’s support page—ProtonVPN has a dedicated guide for Chromebooks. Might help!
Yo, same problem here! chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook drove me nuts for days.
Found a fix tho: clear your Chrome browser cache *and* cookies. For some reason, location data gets stuck even with the VPN on.
Also, try this tool—IPLeak.net. It’ll show if your VPN is actually leaking. If it is, might be time to bug your VPN’s support team.
This is a known issue with some VPNs on ChromeOS. chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook usually happens when the VPN isn’t routing *all* traffic.
Check your VPN settings—look for "split tunneling" and disable it. If that’s on, only some apps use the VPN.
If you’re using a free VPN, that might be the problem too. They’re often unreliable. ExpressVPN has a Chromebook app that works flawlessly for me.
Had this exact issue! chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook was driving me up the wall.
Turns out, my VPN app needed *permissions* to control Chrome’s network settings. Go to *chrome://flags*, search for "network," and enable "VPN network settings override."
Also, try switching to a different server on your VPN. Sometimes one server just glitches out.

Hey everyone,
Wow, didn’t expect so many responses! Tried a bunch of these—clearing cache, disabling split tunneling, and the IPLeak.net tool showed my VPN *was* leaking.
Switched to OpenVPN like someone suggested, and it’s working now! Still weird that ChromeOS makes this so complicated tho.
Thanks a ton, y’all saved me hours of frustration.
(Also, gonna check out NordVPN if this happens again. Heard good things.)
Chromebooks are weird with VPNs, man. chrome browser not picking up vpn on chromebook could be because of the Linux container (if you’re using it).
Try disabling Linux apps temporarily and see if the VPN works. Also, make sure your Chromebook is updated—Google fixed some VPN bugs in the latest OS version.
If all else fails, maybe try a browser extension VPN as a backup? Not ideal, but it’s something.
