Hey everyone,
So, I’ve been trying to set up Gmail proxy over Thunderbird for a while now, but I’m hitting a wall. Has anyone here actually managed to get it working?
I followed a couple of guides, but something’s off—either the connection times out or it just doesn’t authenticate properly. I’m using the latest version of Thunderbird, and my Gmail settings seem fine (I think?).
If anyone’s got this working, could you share your config steps? Like, what proxy settings did you use? Any specific ports or security settings I should double-check?
Also, is there a way to test if the proxy is even working before setting it up in Thunderbird? I’m kinda lost here, lol.
Thanks in advance! You’d be saving me from pulling my hair out over this.
Cheers!
Hey! I had the same issue with Gmail proxy over Thunderbird a while back. Turns out, I was using the wrong port. For Gmail, you should be using port 993 for IMAP and port 465 for SMTP. Also, make sure SSL/TLS is enabled.
If you're still stuck, try using a tool like ProxyCap to test your proxy settings before setting them up in Thunderbird. It’s a lifesaver for debugging.
Good luck!
Yo, I feel your pain. Setting up Gmail proxy over Thunderbird can be a nightmare. One thing that worked for me was disabling the "OAuth2" authentication in Thunderbird and switching to "Normal password." For some reason, OAuth2 kept failing for me.
Also, double-check your proxy IP and port. Sometimes the proxy provider gives you a list of ports, and you might be using the wrong one.
Hope this helps!
Ugh, I remember struggling with this too. One thing that helped me was clearing Thunderbird’s cache and restarting it. Sometimes the app just gets stuck with old settings.
Also, check if your proxy supports SSL. Gmail requires SSL/TLS, so if your proxy doesn’t support it, you’re out of luck.
If all else fails, maybe try a different email client like Mailspring? It has built-in proxy support and might save you some headaches.
Hey! I had the same issue, and it turned out my firewall was blocking the connection. Make sure your firewall or antivirus isn’t interfering with Thunderbird.
Also, try using a different proxy server. Some proxies just don’t play nice with Gmail. I switched to a paid proxy service, and it worked like a charm.
Good luck, and don’t give up!
I feel you, man. Gmail proxy over Thunderbird can be tricky. One thing that worked for me was using a VPN instead of a proxy. It’s way easier to set up, and you don’t have to mess with ports or authentication.
If you’re set on using a proxy, though, make sure you’re using the correct server address. Sometimes it’s not just the IP—it’s the full URL.
Hope this helps!
Wow, thanks so much, everyone! I didn’t expect so many helpful replies. I tried switching to port 993 and enabling SSL/TLS, and it worked! The connection finally went through.
I also tested my proxy using ProxyCap, and it seems to be working fine. I’ll keep the VPN suggestion in mind if I run into more issues.
One quick follow-up: Does anyone know if there’s a way to automate proxy testing? Like, a script or something that checks if the proxy is active before Thunderbird tries to connect? Just curious.
Thanks again, you guys are awesome!
