Subject: Having trouble using Chrome to access an IP address? Any fixes?
Hey everyone,
I’ve been trying to connect to a local device by using Chrome to access an IP address, but it keeps timing out or saying "site can’t be reached."
Anyone else run into this? I’ve tried:
- Typing `http://` before the IP (some say Chrome needs it)
- Disabling extensions temporarily
- Checking firewall settings
Still no luck. Is there a trick to using Chrome to access an IP address directly? Or is this a known issue?
Thanks in advance!
(Also, sorry if this has been asked before—searched but didn’t find a clear answer.)
Hey! Had the same issue last week when using Chrome to access an IP address. Turns out Chrome sometimes blocks "unsafe" connections by default. Try typing `thisisunsafe` directly on the error page (no text box, just type it). Sounds weird, but it bypasses the warning.
Also, check if the IP is correct—maybe ping it first in Command Prompt (`ping 192.168.x.x`) to see if it’s reachable.
Yo, this happens to me all the time with local devices. Chrome can be picky. Try adding the IP to your firewall's allowed list or use another browser like Firefox as a test.
If it works there, then it’s definitely a Chrome thing. Also, clear your cache—sometimes that’s the culprit when using chrome to access an IP address.
Hmm, have you tried using the IP with a port number? Like `http://192.168.x.x:8080`? Some devices need a specific port.
Also, if you’re on a VPN or proxy, disable it temporarily. Chrome might route traffic weirdly when using chrome to access an IP address directly.
This might sound obvious, but double-check if the device is actually serving a web interface. Not all IPs will respond like a website.
If you’re sure it should work, try `curl` or Postman to test the connection outside Chrome. Sometimes using chrome to access an IP address just doesn’t play nice.
Pro tip: Open Chrome’s DevTools (F12), go to the Network tab, and reload the page. It’ll show you exactly where the connection fails when using chrome to access an IP address.
Could be a DNS issue too—try flushing your DNS (`ipconfig /flushdns` in CMD).
Thanks for all the suggestions! Tried the `thisisunsafe` trick and it worked—weird but effective.
Still curious why Chrome makes using chrome to access an IP address so finicky compared to other browsers. Might switch to Firefox for local stuff.
Pinging the IP first was a good call too—turns out my device was offline for a bit. Appreciate the help!
Had this exact problem! Chrome’s HSTS (strict security) might be blocking it. Go to `chrome://net-internals/#hsts` and delete the domain/IP from the list.
Also, make sure the device isn’t blocking *your* IP. Some routers/devices have access controls.
