"What's the best way to monitor a python process running in the background?"

Hey folks!

So I’ve got this python process running in the background, and I wanna keep tabs on it without babysitting the terminal 24/7.

What’s your go-to method?

I’ve tried `ps aux | grep python`, but it feels clunky.

Also, how do you handle crashes? Like, if the python process running suddenly dies, is there a way to auto-restart it?

Bonus Q: Any lightweight tools to log its output?

Thanks in advance!

(ps: sorry for typos, typing this on my phone lol)
Hey! For monitoring a python process running in the background, I’d recommend using `supervisord`. It’s a solid tool that keeps your process alive, restarts it if it crashes, and even logs the output.

You can configure it to auto-restart and redirect stdout/stderr to a file.

Also, `htop` is way better than `ps aux` for real-time monitoring—way less clunky.
If you want something dead simple, just use `nohup` to run your script and redirect output to a file:

```bash
nohup python your_script.py > output.log 2>&1 &
```

Then `tail -f output.log` to watch the logs live.

For crashes, maybe wrap it in a bash loop? Not elegant but works lol.
Check out `pm2`! Yeah, it’s Node.js-focused, but it works for python process running too.

Auto-restarts, logs, even clustering.

```bash
pm2 start your_script.py --interpreter python
```

Plus, `pm2 logs` gives you real-time output. Super handy.
For logging, I’d suggest `systemd` if you’re on Linux.

Create a service file, set `Restart=on-failure`, and it’ll handle crashes + log everything to journalctl.

```bash
journalctl -u your_service_name -f
```

Bit of a learning curve but worth it.
Honestly, just use `screen` or `tmux`.

Run your python process in a detached session, then reattach anytime to check output.

```bash
tmux new -s myscript
python your_script.py
# Detach with Ctrl+B D
```

No fancy tools needed.
Thanks for all the suggestions, folks!

Tried `supervisord` and it’s working great so far. Auto-restart is a lifesaver.

Quick Q tho—any way to get alerts if the python process running crashes multiple times in a row? Like email or something?

Also, `pm2` looks interesting, might test that next. Cheers!
If you want lightweight logging, try `tee`:

```bash
python your_script.py | tee -a output.log
```

For crashes, maybe a cron job to check if the process is alive and restart it?

Not the cleanest, but gets the job done.
`docker` + `docker-compose` could work.

Define your python process in a compose file with `restart: unless-stopped`, and use `docker logs` to monitor.

Overkill for small stuff, but scales well.
For a quick and dirty solution, `while true; do python your_script.py; done` will restart on crash.

Logging? Just append `>> output.log 2>&1`.

Not elegant, but zero setup lol.
