"How do I turn off a proxy server? Steps aren’t working for me."
ugh, this is driving me nuts. i followed like 3 different guides on how do i turn off a proxy server, but it’s still active??
tried the settings > network thing, unchecked the proxy box, even restarted my pc. no luck.
anyone else run into this? am i missing something obvious?
also, why is this so complicated?? just let me disable it ffs.
pls help before i yeet my laptop out the window. thanks.

Hey, I had the same issue last week! Turns out some malware was forcing a proxy on my system. If the usual steps for how do i turn off a proxy server aren’t working, try scanning with Malwarebytes.
Also, check your browser extensions—sometimes they override system settings. Chrome especially loves to sneak in proxy stuff.

did you try resetting your network settings completely?
go to Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network Reset.
this nukes all network configs, so you’ll have to reconnect to wifi after, but it’s saved me before when nothing else worked for how to disable proxy server.
Bro, same. The guides online are trash sometimes.
Here’s what worked for me:
- Open CMD as admin
- Type `netsh winsock reset` and hit enter
- Restart
Sounds weird, but it flushes all network settings. Fixed my proxy hell.
Also, check if your work/school admin locked it. Some orgs force proxies.
If you’re still stuck, try this tool called "Proxy Switcher" from NirSoft. It lets you see and disable proxies super easily.
Sometimes the registry gets messed up too. Be careful poking around there, but a quick search for "proxy" in regedit might show hidden settings.

Quick question—are you using a VPN? Some VPNs auto-enable a proxy and don’t tell you.
Also, check Group Policy (gpedit.msc) if you’re on Win 10 Pro. Sometimes policies override manual settings for how do i turn off a proxy server.

Ugh, proxies are the worst. Had this happen when my ISP was being sketchy.
Try this:
1. Open Control Panel > Internet Options
2. Go to Connections tab > LAN settings
3. Make sure "Automatically detect settings" is CHECKED and proxy is UNCHECKED.
Weirdly, that auto-detect thing fixed it for me.
