"Stuck Behind a Proxy? How to Disconnect from a Proxy Server Properly?"

Hey everyone! Sooo, I’m kinda stuck here—my internet’s acting weird, and I think it’s because of a proxy server.

Anyone know *how to disconnect from a proxy server* without messing things up worse? Like, is there a quick fix or do I need a full guide?

I tried googling, but some tutorials are way too technical. Just need simple steps, y’know?

Also, does it differ for Windows/Mac? Or maybe even phones?

Thanks in advance! 🙏 (and sorry if this is a dumb question lol)

*PS: If you’ve got a sec, explain like I’m 5. My tech skills are... not great haha.*
Hey! No dumb question at all—proxies can be confusing. For Windows, try this:

Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy.

Turn off anything that says "Use a proxy server."

For Mac, it’s in System Preferences > Network > Advanced > Proxies. Uncheck the boxes.

Phones are similar—check Wi-Fi settings or mobile network settings for proxy options.

If you’re still stuck, this guide breaks it down super simple: [link to a beginner-friendly tutorial]. Hope that helps!
omg i had this EXACT issue last week!

on windows, press WIN + R, type "inetcpl.cpl", go to Connections > LAN settings.

UNCHECK "use a proxy server" and boom, done.

mac is kinda the same but buried deeper in system prefs.

also, if ur on chrome, check chrome://settings/system cos sometimes browsers override system settings.

gl!
Not sure if this’ll help, but sometimes malware forces a proxy. Run a scan with Malwarebytes just in case.

For how to disconnect from a proxy server manually, it’s usually in network settings like others said.

But if it keeps resetting, that’s a red flag.
If you’re on a work/school network, they might enforce the proxy. In that case, you can’t disable it without admin rights.

But for personal devices, yeah, just toggle it off in settings.

Side note: VPNs can sometimes conflict with proxies too, so check that if you use one.
Bro, just reset your network settings.

On Windows: Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset.

On iPhone: Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

It’ll wipe saved Wi-Fi passwords tho, so be ready for that.

But it fixes weird proxy ghosts 90% of the time.
Here’s a dumb little trick that worked for me—restart your router.

Sometimes the proxy settings get stuck there, and a hard reset clears it.

Also, if you’re using a public Wi-Fi, they often force proxies. Try switching to mobile data to test.
For a super ELI5 version:

1. Proxy = middleman for your internet.
2. You don’t want it? Tell your computer "no middleman."
3. Do that in network settings (like everyone said).

If it’s still weird, maybe your ISP is doing shady stuff.
If you’re on Android, go to Wi-Fi settings, long-press your network, hit "Modify Network," then look for "Proxy." Set it to "None."

Same idea for iOS but buried in HTTP Proxy under Wi-Fi settings.

Also, some apps (like browsers) have their own proxy settings, so check those too!
Wow, thanks everyone!! Didn’t expect so many replies so fast.

I tried the Windows LAN settings trick and it worked! Turns out some sketchy app had flipped the proxy on without me knowing.

Weirdly, my phone was fine—guess it was just my laptop.

Gonna run that malware scan just in case, though.

Y’all are lifesavers fr 🙌
