"Why Is My Traceroute Test Proxy Showing Unexpected Hops?"
Hey folks,
So I ran a traceroute test proxy to check some network lag, but the results are weird af. There are like 3 extra hops I’ve never seen before?
Is this normal or is something fishy going on?
I thought a traceroute test proxy would just show the usual path, but now I’m seeing random IPs. Could it be a misconfigured proxy or maybe some kinda routing loop?
Anyone else run into this? Tips appreciated!
(Also, if you know a better way to use a traceroute test proxy for this, lmk. Maybe I’m doing it wrong lol.)
Thanks!
Hey! Yeah, unexpected hops in a traceroute test proxy can be super confusing. Sometimes it’s just temporary routing changes—ISPs reroute traffic all the time.
Have you tried running the test at different times? If those extra hops disappear, it’s probably just network fluctuations.
If they stick around, maybe check if your proxy settings are correct. Tools like MTR (Matt’s Traceroute) can give you more detailed insights than a basic traceroute test proxy.
lol I feel you. Had the same issue last week. Turns out my VPN was messing with the traceroute test proxy results.
If you’re using a VPN or any kinda tunneling software, try disabling it and running the test again. Also, websites like ipinfo.io can help you check if those random IPs are legit or sketchy.
Those extra hops could be load balancers or CDN nodes. A lot of networks use them nowadays, and they don’t always show up consistently.
For a deeper dive, try using a tool like PingPlotter alongside your traceroute test proxy. It visualizes the path and helps spot patterns.
Btw, is this happening with multiple destinations or just one? If it’s just one, might be their infra acting up.
nah bro, not necessarily fishy. Proxies and intermediate nodes can add hops depending on how they’re set up.
Try running a direct traceroute (no proxy) and compare. If the paths are way different, your traceroute test proxy might be routing through some weird middleman.
Also, check out looking glass servers from major ISPs—they let you run traceroutes from their end. Super handy for cross-verifying.
Hey! Just wanted to say thanks for all the tips—super helpful. I disabled my VPN and ran the traceroute test proxy again, and the extra hops vanished. Guess it was just my VPN being weird.
Still kinda wild how much that stuff affects routing. Gonna try PingPlotter next like someone suggested.
Appreciate the help, y’all!
Ugh, traceroute test proxy issues are the worst. Could be a bunch of things:
- Geo-routing (traffic taking a detour cuz of location)
- ISP peering changes
- Or yeah, maybe a misconfigured proxy
Try using a service like Path Analyzer Pro—it’s like traceroute on steroids and might help pinpoint where things go sideways.
Random hops in a traceroute test proxy? Classic.
First, make sure you’re not accidentally using a public proxy or something. Then, try a different DNS (like Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1). Sometimes DNS weirdness adds invisible detours.
If you’re still stuck, post the IPs here—someone might recognize ‘em.
