How to Set Up and Use a Firefox Proxy for Better Privacy? or Is a Firefox Proxy the Best Way to Brows

"Why Isn’t My Firefox Proxy Working? Common Fixes?"

Hey folks,

So I set up a firefox proxy for better privacy, but it’s just... not working? Super frustrating.

Sometimes it connects, other times it just times out. Anyone else run into this?

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:
- Double-checked the proxy settings (duh)
- Restarted Firefox (obv)
- Switched between HTTP/SOCKS5 (no luck)

Also, my ISP might be blocking it? Idk.

Any quick fixes or am I missing something obvious?

Thanks in advance!

Hey! Had the same issue last week. Turns out my firewall was blocking Firefox proxy connections.

Try disabling your antivirus/firewall temporarily to test. If it works, add an exception for Firefox.

Also, check if your proxy provider has updated configs—some require manual updates.

For testing, you can use free proxies from sites like hidemy.name or proxy-ninja to see if it’s your setup or the proxy itself.

Hope that helps!

Ugh, Firefox proxy issues are the worst.

First, clear your cache and cookies—sometimes old data messes with connections.

Also, try flipping the "DNS over HTTPS" setting in Firefox (Options > General > Network Settings). Weirdly, that fixed it for me.

If your ISP is shady, maybe try a VPN instead? ProtonVPN has a free tier that’s decent for testing.

Yo!

Double-check the port numbers in your firefox proxy settings. I once spent hours debugging only to realize I typo’d the port lol.

Also, some proxies don’t play nice with IPv6. Go to about:config and search for "ipv6"—disable it if enabled.

If all else fails, maybe your proxy is just dead. Test with another one from free-proxy-list.net.

This might sound dumb, but is your system clock correct? SSL/TLS proxies freak out if your time is off by even a few minutes.

Also, try launching Firefox in "Troubleshoot Mode" (help menu) to rule out extensions breaking things.

If you’re using a paid proxy, their support might have a config guide—worth asking!

Firefox proxy acting up? Classic.

Try switching your DNS to Cloudflare (1.1.1.1) or Google (8.8.8.8). Sometimes ISP DNS blocks proxy traffic silently.

Also, check about:networking—it shows active connections. If your proxy isn’t even listed there, it’s a config issue.

Had this exact headache last month!

Turns out my router was blocking outbound proxy ports. Logged into it and whitelisted the ports—fixed instantly.

Also, some proxies need auth credentials in the URL (like user:pass@proxy.com). Missed that at first.

For testing, webshare.io has free proxies with auth built in.

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions!

Tried the DNS switch and disabling IPv6—no luck yet.

But launching Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode actually worked?? Guess one of my extensions was messing with the firefox proxy. Time to play detective with my add-ons...

Any way to pinpoint which extension is the culprit without disabling them one by one?

Also, gonna test those free proxies later. Appreciate the help!
