"Is my proxy server slowing down my internet? How can I fix it?"
Hey guys,
So I’ve been using my proxy server for a while now, but lately my internet feels *super* slow. Like, pages take forever to load, and streaming is a nightmare.
Could my proxy server be the culprit? I’m not super techy, but I’ve heard bad configs or overloaded servers can cause this.
Any tips to speed things up? Maybe changing settings or switching providers? Or is it just my internet being trash?
Thanks in advance!

*PS: If this isn’t the right place to ask, lmk where I should post instead. Cheers!*
Hey! Yeah, your proxy server could totally be the issue. If it's overloaded or poorly configured, it can bottleneck your connection.
Try bypassing it temporarily to see if speeds improve. If they do, you might need to switch providers or tweak settings.
Tools like Pingdom or SpeedTest can help compare speeds with/without the proxy. Also, check if your proxy has a closer server location—distance matters!
Bro, same thing happened to me last month. My proxy server was crawling until I switched to a different one. Some free proxies are just garbage—too many users, not enough bandwidth.
If you’re using a free service, consider paying for a better one (like NordVPN or Smartproxy). Night and day difference.
Also, clear your cache and restart your router. Sometimes it’s that simple lol.
It’s possible! Proxy servers add an extra hop, which can slow things down. Here’s what I’d do:
1. Test your base internet speed (no proxy) on fast.com.
2. Test again WITH the proxy. If there’s a huge gap, that’s your problem.
If it’s the proxy, try adjusting encryption settings—higher security = slower speeds. Or just ditch it for a VPN if privacy is your main concern.
Honestly, your proxy server might be the villain here. Free ones are especially bad—they throttle speeds to push paid plans.
I’d recommend checking out ProxyBench or similar tools to compare performance. Also, make sure your proxy isn’t leaking DNS—that can mess with speed too.
If all else fails, maybe time for a new provider?
Yup, proxies can definitely slow you down. They’re middlemen, so if they’re overloaded or far away, your data takes the scenic route.
Try switching server locations in your proxy settings. Closer = faster. Also, disable any unnecessary features like ad-blocking if your proxy has them—they eat up resources.
If you’re still stuck, maybe share your proxy provider? Some are just known for being slow.
Thanks for all the suggestions, guys! I tried bypassing my proxy server, and my internet was way faster—so it’s definitely the culprit.
I’ll test some of the tools mentioned (ProxyBench looks handy) and maybe switch providers. Quick q: anyone know if rotating proxies are faster, or should I stick with static ones?
Also, gonna tweak the settings like some of you said. Appreciate the help!
Could be your proxy server, could be your ISP, could be both. Start by isolating the problem:
- Run a traceroute (just google "how to traceroute") to see where the lag happens.
- Try a different proxy or no proxy at all.
If it’s the proxy, look for one with low latency. Some providers like Luminati or Oxylabs have speed-optimized options.
Hey! I had this exact issue. My proxy server was dragging my internet to a crawl because it was routing through some distant server.
I switched to a closer server location in the settings, and boom—way faster. Also, check if your proxy has a "speed mode" or similar. Some let you prioritize speed over security.
If nothing works, maybe your proxy just sucks. Time for an upgrade?
