What’s the Best MTG Card API for Building Magic: The Gathering Apps and Tools?

Hey everyone! 👋

So, I’ve been tinkering with building a Magic: The Gathering app, and I’m on the hunt for the *best MTG card API* out there. I’ve checked out a couple like Scryfall and MTGJSON, but I’m not 100% sure which one’s the best fit.

Anyone got recommendations? I’m looking for something with solid documentation, up-to-date card data, and maybe even some cool features like image URLs or pricing info.

Also, if you’ve used the *best MTG card API* for your own projects, how was your experience? Any gotchas or things to watch out for?

Thanks in advance! 🙌
Hey! I’ve been using Scryfall for a while now, and it’s hands down the best MTG card API I’ve worked with. The docs are super clear, and they update their data super fast whenever new sets drop.

Plus, they’ve got image URLs for every card, which is a lifesaver if you’re building something visual. Pricing info is also there, but it’s not as detailed as some other tools.

Only thing to watch out for is rate limits—they’re pretty strict, so you’ll need to handle that in your app.
Scryfall is great, but if you’re looking for something with more pricing data, check out MTGStocks’ API. It’s not as polished as Scryfall, but it’s got way more detailed pricing history and trends.

I’d say it depends on what you’re building. If you need a solid all-rounder, Scryfall is the best MTG card API. But if pricing is your main focus, MTGStocks might be worth a look.
Yo! MTGJSON is another solid option. It’s got everything you need—card data, set info, even rulings. The JSON format is super easy to work with, and they update regularly.

The only downside is that it doesn’t have built-in image URLs or pricing info. You’d have to pull that from somewhere else. But if you’re just looking for raw data, it’s one of the best MTG card APIs out there.
Honestly, I’ve tried a few, and Scryfall is the best MTG card API for most use cases. Their search syntax is super powerful, and the docs are a breeze to follow.

One thing I love is their bulk data downloads—super handy if you’re building something that needs a lot of data upfront.

Only gripe is their rate limits, but you can work around that with some caching.
If you’re looking for something a bit more niche, check out Deckbrew. It’s not as feature-rich as Scryfall or MTGJSON, but it’s super lightweight and easy to use.

It’s got basic card data and image URLs, but no pricing info. I’d say it’s a good option if you’re building something simple and don’t need all the bells and whistles.
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! 🙌

I ended up giving Scryfall a try, and it’s been awesome so far. The docs are super clear, and the bulk data downloads are a lifesaver.

Quick question though—anyone know if there’s a way to get more detailed pricing data without hitting rate limits? Or should I just stick with MTGStocks for that part?

Thanks again, you all rock! 🚀
Scryfall is the GOAT for sure. Best MTG card API hands down.

Their advanced search is a game-changer, and the fact that they include pricing data (even if it’s not super detailed) is a huge plus.

Only thing I’d say is make sure you read their docs thoroughly—there’s a lot of cool stuff in there that’s easy to miss.
