Hey everyone,
So, I’ve been thinking about this lately—what are the best proxy games to play when you can’t get your hands on the originals? Y’know, those games that kinda *feel* like the real deal but aren’t *technically* the same?
For example, if you can’t play *Starcraft*, maybe *Tooth and Tail* scratches that itch? Or if *Dark Souls* is out of reach, *Salt and Sanctuary* might do the trick.
I’m curious—what proxy games have you guys tried that actually hold up? Like, are there any hidden gems that totally nail the vibe of the originals?
Also, do you think proxy games are just a stopgap, or can they stand on their own? Would love to hear your thoughts!
Cheers!
Oh man, I love this topic! Proxy games are such a lifesaver when you can't get the OG stuff.
For *Starcraft*, I’d totally recommend *They Are Billions*. It’s got that same RTS vibe but with a zombie twist. Super fun and challenging!
And if you’re into *Dark Souls*, *Blasphemous* is a killer Metroidvania with that same punishing-but-fair gameplay.
As for whether they stand on their own, I think some do! Like, *Hades* feels like a roguelike proxy for *Diablo*, but it’s so polished it’s its own thing now.
Anyone tried *Hollow Knight* as a *Metroid* proxy? Curious if it holds up.
Yo, proxy games are my jam!
If you’re missing *Monster Hunter*, *Dauntless* is a solid free-to-play alternative. It’s not as deep, but it’s got the same monster-slaying fun.
Also, *Slay the Spire* is a great proxy for deck-building games like *Magic: The Gathering*. It’s addictive af.
I think proxy games can totally stand on their own if they bring something fresh to the table. Like, *Celeste* is a platformer proxy for *Super Meat Boy*, but it’s got such a heartfelt story it’s in a league of its own.
What do you guys think about *Dead Cells* as a *Castlevania* proxy?
Hey! Great thread idea.
For *Civilization* fans, *Old World* is a fantastic proxy. It’s got that same 4X strategy vibe but with a historical twist.
And if you’re into *The Sims*, *Stardew Valley* kinda scratches that life-sim itch, but with farming and relationships.
I think proxy games are more than just stopgaps. They often take inspiration and make something unique. Like, *Apex Legends* started as a *Titanfall* proxy but became its own beast.
Anyone know a good proxy for *Zelda: Breath of the Wild*? I’ve heard *Genshin Impact* is close, but I’m not sure.
Proxy games are such a cool way to explore similar genres without breaking the bank.
If you’re into *Overwatch*, *Paladins* is a decent free alternative. It’s not as polished, but it’s fun for a quick fix.
And for *Skyrim* fans, *Outward* is a great open-world RPG proxy. It’s more hardcore, but the exploration feels similar.
I think proxy games can absolutely stand on their own. Like, *Hades* started as a roguelike proxy but now it’s a genre-defining game.
Anyone tried *Tunic* as a *Zelda* proxy? Heard it’s amazing.
Proxy games are such a fun rabbit hole to dive into!
If you’re missing *Pokémon*, *Temtem* is a great alternative. It’s got that same monster-catching vibe but with a modern twist.
And for *Diablo* fans, *Grim Dawn* is a fantastic ARPG proxy. It’s got that same loot grind but with a darker atmosphere.
I think proxy games can be more than just substitutes. Like, *Stardew Valley* started as a *Harvest Moon* proxy but became a genre staple.
Anyone know a good proxy for *Animal Crossing*? I’ve heard *Cozy Grove* is similar.
Proxy games are such a neat concept!
If you’re into *XCOM*, *Phoenix Point* is a great alternative. It’s got that same tactical combat but with a Lovecraftian twist.
And for *Minecraft* fans, *Terraria* is a fantastic proxy. It’s 2D, but the building and exploration are just as satisfying.
I think proxy games can totally stand on their own. Like, *Hollow Knight* started as a *Metroid* proxy but became a masterpiece in its own right.
Anyone tried *Disco Elysium* as a *Planescape: Torment* proxy?
Proxy games are such a cool way to explore new takes on old favorites.
If you’re missing *World of Warcraft*, *Guild Wars 2* is a great MMO proxy. It’s got that same epic world-building but with a more casual vibe.
And for *Call of Duty* fans, *Splitgate* is a fun FPS proxy with portal mechanics. It’s not as polished, but it’s a blast.
I think proxy games can absolutely stand on their own. Like, *Dead Cells* started as a *Castlevania* proxy but became a genre-defining roguelike.
Anyone know a good proxy for *Final Fantasy*?

If you’re into *Hearthstone*, *Legends of Runeterra* is a great card game proxy. It’s got that same strategic depth but with a League of Legends twist.
And for *GTA* fans, *Saints Row* is a solid open-world proxy. It’s more over-the-top, but the chaos is just as fun.
I think proxy games can be more than just substitutes. Like, *Celeste* started as a *Super Meat Boy* proxy but became a genre-defining platformer.
