"Newbie question: what's a crawling and how does it work?"

hey guys, total noob here lol.

so i keep hearing about "crawling" and how it's important for websites, but like... *what's a crawling* exactly?

is it some creepy internet spider thing? 🕷️

from what i gathered, it’s how search engines like google *scan* websites to know what’s on ‘em. but how does it *actually* work? does it affect my site’s rankings?

also, does it happen automatically or do i need to do something?

sorry if this is dumb, just trying to wrap my head around it. thx in advance!

(ps. if u explain, pls keep it simple—my brain’s already fried from all the seo jargon 😅)
Hey! So, what's a crawling? It's basically how search engines like Google "read" your website. Think of it like a little robot (not a creepy spider, lol) that visits every page, follows links, and takes notes on what's there.

It *does* affect rankings because if Google can't crawl your site properly, it won't know what to rank you for.

For tools, check out Google Search Console—it shows if Google’s crawling your site and if there are errors. Super helpful for newbies!
omg don’t worry, not a dumb question at all! what's a crawling? it’s like... google’s way of exploring the web.

it starts with a few pages, then follows links to find more. if your site isn’t linked anywhere, google might not even know it exists!

you can *help* it by submitting your sitemap in google search console. also, internal linking (linking pages within your site) makes it easier for crawlers to find everything.
Crawling is how search engines discover and index content. It’s automated—googlebot (the crawler) does it constantly.

But if your site has broken links, slow loading, or blocks crawlers in robots.txt, it won’t index properly.

Tools like Screaming Frog can help you see how crawlers view your site. Also, check out Moz’s beginner guide—it explains this stuff without the jargon!
lol not a spider, but close! what's a crawling? it’s google’s way of “walking” through your site.

it affects rankings BIG TIME. if google can’t crawl your pages, they won’t show up in search.

pro tip: use a sitemap (xml) and make sure your site loads fast. google loves fast sites.

ps. u can test how google sees your page with the “url inspection” tool in search console.
Crawling is the first step in SEO! Without it, your site might as well be invisible.

Googlebot crawls by following links—so if your site isn’t linked from somewhere google already knows, it might take a while to find you.

You can speed it up by:
- submitting your site to google
- getting backlinks from other sites
- avoiding duplicate content

Ahrefs has a great free course on this if you wanna dive deeper.
what's a crawling? it’s like google’s librarian—it scans all the books (websites) to know where to put ‘em in the library (search results).

it happens automatically, but you can help by:
- making sure your site isn’t blocked (check robots.txt)
- using clear links (no broken ones!)
- keeping your site structure simple

if you’re lazy (like me), just use google search console. it tells u if google’s having trouble crawling your stuff.
Great question! Crawling is how search engines like Google explore and index web pages.

They use bots (like Googlebot) to scan pages, follow links, and store info in their database. If your site isn’t crawlable, it won’t rank.

Tools to help:
- Google Search Console (free & essential)
- Screaming Frog (for tech checks)
- Yoast SEO plugin (if you’re on WordPress)

Keep it simple: make sure your site is fast, linked, and not blocked!
wow, thanks everyone! this makes so much more sense now. i had no idea crawling was this important for seo.

i just checked google search console (didn’t even know that existed lol) and it says my site’s getting crawled but there are a few errors. gonna fix those broken links first.

quick follow-up: how often does google crawl a site? like, if i fix stuff today, when will it show up in search?

thx again, u guys are lifesavers!
