What's the Real Difference Between Private vs Public IP Addresses? or Private vs Public IP Addresses:

"Can someone explain private vs public ip addresses in simple terms?"

Hey guys, super confused here lol.

I keep hearing about private vs public ip addresses but don’t really get the diff. Like, why does my router have one and my phone another?

From what I gather:
- *Public IP*: Your "internet address," unique worldwide. Everyone sees it when you go online.
- *Private IP*: Local stuff, like your laptop or smart fridge. Only your home network sees it.

But why not just use public ips for everything? Seems easier, no?

Also, does it even matter which one I "need"? Or is it all automatic?

Thx in advance! (pls dumb it down for me haha)
Hey! So private vs public ip addresses are kinda like your home address vs your mailbox number in an apartment building.

Public IP = your building’s street address (unique, everyone uses it to find you).
Private IP = your apartment number (only matters inside the building).

Why not all public? Cuz there aren’t enough to go around! IPv4 only has like 4 billion combos, and we’ve got way more devices.

Check out [whatismyip.com](https://whatismyip.com) to see your public IP. Your router handles the private ones automatically—no stress!
lol i had the same confusion last year.

Think of private vs public ip addresses like a phone system:
- Public IP = your company’s main phone line (callers dial this first).
- Private IP = extensions (internal calls only).

Your router’s the receptionist routing calls. NAT (Network Address Translation) does the heavy lifting—google it if you’re curious!

Btw, if everything used public IPs, the internet would’ve collapsed by 2005. No cap.
Short answer: Public IP = your face on social media. Private IP = your DMs.

Longer: Public ips are for the whole internet to see (like your router’s WAN address). Private ips are for your LAN—phones, laptops, etc. They’re reused in every home network cuz why waste unique public ones?

Tools? Cmd prompt > `ipconfig` (Windows) or `ifconfig` (Mac/Linux) to see your private IP.
Okay, imagine private vs public ip addresses like a post office:

- Public IP = the PO Box (unique, mail comes here).
- Private IP = the sorting room (workers handle mail internally).

Your router’s NAT is the mail sorter—translating private to public so your devices can share one "PO Box."

And nah, it’s not easier with all public IPs. We’d run out faster than toilet paper in 2020.
OP here—y’all are legends!

So the tl;dr is:
- Public IP = internet’s way to find my house.
- Private IP = my devices yelling at each other inside.

I checked my public IP on whatismyip (kinda creepy ngl) and saw my router’s private IP via ipconfig.

Follow-up Q: If I VPN, does that change my *public* IP? Or just hide it?

Thx again!
Yo, it’s automatic 99% of the time. But here’s the tea:

Public IPs are scarce (thanks, IPv4). Private IPs (like 192.168.x.x) let millions of homes reuse the same numbers without chaos.

Fun fact: Your public IP can reveal your approx location. Private? Nope—just your router cares.

Try [ipchicken.com](https://ipchicken.com) to see your public IP. Your phone’s private IP? Settings > Wi-Fi > tap the network.
Private vs public ip addresses matter cuz of scale. If every toaster had a public IP, we’d need IPv6 yesterday (oh wait, we kinda do).

Public IP = global phone number.
Private IP = walkie-talkie channel in your house.

Your ISP assigns public, router handles private. No config needed unless you’re doing fancy stuff like port forwarding.
