Man, I feel your pain. The google image search api used to be so easy, but now it's a nightmare.
I switched to using RapidAPI’s marketplace—they’ve got a few image search APIs that work well. Some are based on Bing, others on smaller engines.
Another hack? Use Google Custom Search JSON API and tweak it for images. It’s not perfect, but it’s something.
