First time dealing with gearbox trouble, need some local advice

Just moved to the industrial area for work and my sedan started making this horrible grinding noise whenever I shift into third gear. Took it to a regular garage down the road and the mechanic there said the synchros are probably gone and I'd need a full gearbox rebuild, which honestly scared me a bit because I have no clue about costs or who to trust around here.
